Does anybody know of or have plans for a one person luthier work shop. I will be moving soon, will build a work shop and would like to make it right the first time

Those who have inspired my dreams include, John How, Bruce Dickey, Mario, Hank Mauel, John Hall, Charlie Hoffman, etc. There are many others. Check out their sites.

And if you really want to be inspired by the ultimate shop...check out True North Guitars. That shop is a true showcase...even down to the oriental rugs on the floor!

I'm sure there's no cookie-cutter shop that will fit all. It's a personal thing based on the operations you do and the tools you have and plan to have. Check out Bruce's suggestion on electrical considerations.

Take the time to do the research and see what works for others. Have fun and make it fit your personality, budget and needs.

Possibly invest in the GAL Big Red Books. The third one, as well as having a number of thought provoking tuning articles (I got it for the lowdown on Al Carruth's free plate tuning method), has a couple of interviews with makers re: shop layout, rationale, etc.

Also check out the Grizzly website. They have a shop layout program so you can figure out how to maximize your space.

As JJ mentioned, also check out Bruce's guidelines for a shop electrical setup in the Jigs section. I used that as a starting point and it was a tremendous help.
